Preparing Your Home for a New French Bulldog Puppy

Farmhouse Frenchies • March 15, 2026

Bringing home a French Bulldog puppy is an exciting moment! Those squishy faces, bat ears, puppy breath and sweet personalities make Frenchies impossible not to fall in love with.

But before your new puppy arrives, it’s important to prepare your home so the transition is smooth for both you and your new best friend.

At Farmhouse Frenchies, we’ve helped many families welcome their first French Bulldog puppy, and a little preparation goes a long way in helping your puppy feel safe, comfortable, and confident in their new environment.

Whether you're bringing home a puppy from us here in Central Ohio or from another responsible breeder, here are a few things you can do to get your home ready before your Frenchie arrives.

Create a Safe Space for Your Puppy

Just like babies, puppies need a safe space where they can relax and feel secure.

Many new Frenchie parents use a crate, which we highly recommend, or a small puppy playpen during the first few weeks. This helps with early training and keeps your puppy from getting into trouble while they’re learning the rules of the house.

A good starter setup includes:

  • A comfortable dog bed
  • A soft blanket
  • A few safe chew toys
  • A small water bowl nearby

French Bulldogs love being close to their people, so placing their sleeping or resting space somewhere near family activity is ideal. This allows them to feel included and secure while still having a place of their own.

Crate training is also extremely helpful for house training. Dogs naturally prefer a clean sleeping space, so a properly sized crate can help encourage good bathroom habits early on.

Think of your puppy’s crate or playpen as their little bedroom — a safe place where they can relax, nap, and recharge.

Puppy-Proof Your Home

French Bulldog puppies are curious little critters. Everything is new, interesting, and worth investigating!

Before bringing your puppy home, take a quick walk through your house from a puppy’s perspective and remove anything they might chew, swallow, or get tangled in.

Some common things to watch for include:

  • Electrical cords
  • Shoes and small household objects
  • Kids’ toys left on the floor
  • Houseplants that may be toxic to dogs
  • Cleaning products within reach

Frenchies especially love chewing while they are teething, so giving them safe chew toys and keeping tempting household items out of reach can save you from a lot of “uh-oh” moments.

Another helpful tip is to block off areas of the house you don't want your puppy exploring yet. Baby gates can be very useful in the early weeks while your puppy is learning boundaries.

Puppy-proofing may sound simple, but it can prevent accidents and make the adjustment period much easier for everyone.

Stock Up on Puppy Essentials

Before your Frenchie arrives, it’s helpful to have the basics ready so you aren’t scrambling for supplies during those first few busy days.

Some must-have items include:

  • Food and water bowls
  • High-quality puppy food
  • A collar and leash
  • Puppy pads for early training
  • Durable chew toys
  • A crate or puppy playpen
  • Treats for training and rewards

Having these items ready ahead of time allows you to focus on bonding with your puppy instead of running errands.

Consistency is important during the transition. Keeping your puppy on a similar feeding schedule and routine can help them adjust more quickly.

Plan for the First Few Nights

The first night with a new puppy can be exciting — and sometimes a little noisy.

Your puppy is leaving their littermates, mother, and familiar environment for the very first time. Because of this, it’s completely normal for puppies to cry or whimper during the first few nights in their new home.

This doesn’t mean anything is wrong — it simply means they are adjusting to a big change.

A few things that can help during those early nights include:

  • Keeping their sleeping area warm and cozy
  • Placing their crate near your bedroom so they feel less alone
  • Following a simple bedtime routine
  • Offering calm reassurance if they seem nervous

Many puppies settle down quickly once they realize they are safe and part of your family.

Within just a few nights, most French Bulldogs begin sleeping comfortably and adjusting to their new routine.

Patience during this stage is key. Remember that your puppy is experiencing a lot of new sights, smells, and sounds all at once.

Schedule Your First Vet Visit

A veterinarian visit should be scheduled within the first few days of bringing your puppy home.

This first visit allows your vet to perform a wellness check, review your puppy’s vaccination records, and answer any questions you may have about feeding, care, and development.

At Farmhouse Frenchies, all of our AKC registered French Bulldog puppies receive:

  • A full health check
  • First vaccinations
  • Deworming before going home so they start life healthy and strong.

Your veterinarian will help guide you through the rest of your puppy’s vaccination schedule and provide recommendations for flea prevention, heartworm prevention, and nutrition.

Establishing a relationship with a trusted vet early on helps ensure your puppy grows up happy and healthy.

The Most Important Thing: Love and Patience

French Bulldogs are known for their affectionate personalities and their strong bond with their families.

Your new puppy will need a little time to adjust, learn routines, and understand their new home. Like any baby, they are learning everything for the first time.

With patience, consistency, and lots of love, your Frenchie will quickly become a cherished member of the family.

At Farmhouse Frenchies, we believe bringing home a puppy is more than just adding a pet — it's welcoming a lifelong companion.

Our puppies are raised right here in our home in Greater Columbus, Ohio, surrounded by family and socialized daily. Early socialization helps them grow into confident, well-adjusted dogs who thrive in their future homes.
